A Modest Proposal

1.  Satire Presentations

In small groups you will work together to create a presentation on one of the literary techniques used in satires.

You will either be assigned irony, sarcasm, humor, and exaggeration.

For each technique you must include a definition, five examples, and explanations for how the technique is used.
You may include examples of news articles, videos, pictures, movies, etc.

Your examples should relate to any food related issue.
(World hunger, food waste, quality, over consumption, etc.)

You will present these to the class.

As each group presents add an example of irony, sarcasm and exaggeration to your satire notes. 

2.  Ireland Background Information

Briefly read through the link to build background information about Ireland during the 1700's.

3.    Modest Proposal

As a class, we will read Jonathan Swift's Modest Proposal.

As you read consider how this is an example of satire.

Discussion Questions
Analyze the criticism Swift makes of the Irish.
Identify techniques of satire utilized in this essay.
Summarize the essay to the best of your ability.
Determine your opinion on the piece.


With a partner, complete the handout. 
This needs to be completed for tomorrow.  

Closure: 

Give one example of a satirical technique used in A Modest Proposal.
